Greece raises alarm over Ukraine war “spilling into” Mediterranean
Greece has stepped up diplomatic pressure on Ukraine after the discovery of a suspicious maritime drone near the island of Lefkada.
Greek Foreign Minister George Gerapetritis said Athens will not allow the Mediterranean Sea to become a zone of military operations, Caliber.Az reports, citing Greek media.
“Greece will ensure that the Mediterranean remains untouched by military operations and remains a sea of peace, a sea belonging to its peoples,” he stressed after talks with Croatian Foreign Minister Gordan Grlic Radman.
Gerapetritis also noted that the European Union is confronting unprecedented security challenges following four years of active conflicts across the broader region.
“The greatest challenge, of course, is preventing the spread of the wars that are troubling our neighborhood,” he said.
According to Greek authorities, the discovered drone may have been a Ukrainian naval kamikaze unmanned vessel of the “Mamai” type, allegedly intended for use against a Russian ship in the Mediterranean Sea.
Investigations are ongoing at military facilities in the Skaramagas region near Athens, where specialists are examining the drone’s control systems and mission data, as well as defusing explosives and detonators.
Greek Defence Minister Nikos Dendias and government spokesperson Pavlos Marinakis have also expressed concern over the incident, calling on Kyiv to provide explanations.
Officials in Athens argue that such incidents highlight the risk of the consequences of the war in Ukraine spreading beyond the Black Sea region.
