Over decade-old Simpsons episode echoes deadly cruise ship virus outbreak
An episode of The Simpsons depicting a deadly virus outbreak aboard a cruise ship has resurfaced online after a hantavirus outbreak linked to the expedition vessel MV Hondius prompted quarantines and international health monitoring measures.
The 2012 episode from Season 23 showed the Simpson family aboard a cruise ship when an emergency announcement warns passengers about a rapidly spreading virus, The Mirror US draws the comparison.
On a static-filled screen, General William Sullivan tells passengers: “The deadly Pandora virus is spreading rapidly. All ships must remain at sea until further...” before the transmission cuts off. He then adds, “Humanity must endure.”
Moments later, panic spreads across the ship as passengers react to the word “Virus!”
The real-life outbreak aboard the MV Hondius has resulted in at least three deaths, while several passengers with confirmed or suspected hantavirus cases have been quarantined, according to the World Health Organization (WHO).
On May 11, American passengers from the vessel returned to the United States after the ship docked in Spain’s Canary Islands. Passengers began leaving the ship on May 10 under strict health precautions, with personnel wearing full-body protective suits and breathing masks escorting travelers ashore in Tenerife.
Unlike the fictional storyline, however, the current outbreak is not part of a prank or misunderstanding. Health authorities have confirmed that the hantavirus outbreak aboard the MV Hondius is under active monitoring.
Despite public concern, the WHO has stressed that hantavirus poses a low risk to the broader public. The organization stated that the outbreak is “not another COVID-19.”
The creators of “The Simpsons” have long had a reputation as prophets, as over the sitcom’s nearly 40-year history, they have predicted a significant number of landmark global social and political events, including the election of businessman Donald Trump as U.S. president.
