Gulf states submit UN letter condemning Iran over Hormuz claims
The Gulf states and Jordan have submitted a joint letter to the United Nations condemning recent Iranian statements regarding the Strait of Hormuz, warning against any attempt to assert unilateral control over the key shipping route.
In the letter, Bahrain, Saudi Arabia, United Arab Emirates, Kuwait, Qatar and Jordan categorically rejected what they described as any Iranian effort to establish “new legal norms” or impose unilateral authority over the waterway.
The signatories stressed that the Strait of Hormuz is an international maritime corridor and must remain open to unrestricted navigation in accordance with international law.
The letter also condemned an alleged drone strike attributed to Iran targeting an oil tanker operated by the Abu Dhabi National Oil Company (ADNOC) while it was transiting the strait.
The incident, the authors argued, constitutes a serious breach of international law and poses a direct threat to the safety of civilian shipping in one of the world’s most critical energy chokepoints.
