FAO сommends Azerbaijan for building resilient, inclusive food systems
Food security is a global challenge that demands local solutions and strong international cooperation, said Nasar Hayat, the representative of the Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO) of the United Nations in Azerbaijan.
In his address at the Baku conference, Hayat underlined the importance of the event, stressing that food safety is not simply a technical issue, but a matter of public trust and national well-being, Caliber.Az reports, citing local media.
“It affects the health of citizens, economic development, and the sustainability of food systems,” he noted.
He emphasised that FAO works closely with governments, international and local partners, and institutions to build robust, inclusive, and sustainable food systems. In this effort, he said, Azerbaijan has proven to be a valuable and proactive partner.
"FAO is proud of its partnership with Azerbaijan," Hayat said, highlighting the roles of several national institutions. "The Ministry of Agriculture, the Food Safety Agency, the Azerbaijan Food Safety Institute, and the country’s universities are our key partners. Azerbaijani institutions have shown real leadership in creating a food safety system that is prepared for contemporary risks and is integrated with global frameworks."
FAO, headquartered in Rome and established in 1945, is a specialised UN agency leading global efforts to eliminate hunger, improve nutrition, and ensure food security.
The organisation brings together over 190 member states to promote sustainable agricultural practices, protect natural resources, support rural development, and shape international policy in food and agriculture. It also plays a vital role in achieving the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals, particularly those tied to food systems and sustainable agriculture.
Azerbaijan became a member of the FAO on October 20, 1995. Since then, the country has actively partnered with the organisation on a wide range of projects aimed at advancing agricultural productivity, safeguarding food security, promoting sustainable land use, and enhancing rural livelihoods.
Azerbaijan also hosts the FAO Partnership and Liaison Office in Baku, which coordinates joint initiatives and facilitates regional collaboration across the food and agriculture sectors.
