Finnish president says he “smiled” after opposition victory in Hungary election
Finnish President Alexander Stubb has expressed satisfaction with the results of Hungary’s parliamentary elections during a visit to Canada.
At Carleton University, when asked about changes in Hungary’s government, Stubb said: “I would be lying if I said I haven’t smiled these past four days,” Caliber.Az reports, citing Hungarian media.
Earlier, in Hungary’s parliamentary elections, the Tisza Party secured a constitutional majority, after which several European leaders congratulated its leader, Péter Magyar, on the victory.
Stubb also publicly congratulated Magyar, stressing that the result is significant not only for Hungary but also for Europe as a whole and for supporters of liberal democracy.
Hungarian outgoing Prime Minister Viktor Orbán acknowledged responsibility for the outcome that pushed his Fidesz party into opposition.
Orbán said the message of the opposition, led by Péter Magyar, proved stronger than that of his party, describing it as the key factor behind the loss.
