Georgia's ruling party vows political reckoning for opposition after October vote

22 August 2024 10:59

Bidzina Ivanishvili, the founder and honorary chairman of Georgia's ruling Georgian Dream-Democratic Georgia party, has promised to stage a symbolic "Nuremberg trial" against the opposition United National Movement (UNM) party.

This action is planned to follow the parliamentary elections scheduled for October 26, Caliber.Az reports via Russian media.

Speaking at an election rally, Ivanishvili stated, "The October 26 elections should serve as a Nuremberg trial for the National Movement, where the constitutional majority of the Georgian people will deliver a decisive verdict against these politicians who lack patriotism and act as foreign agents willing to undertake anti-state tasks."

The Georgian Dream party further announced its intention to declare the United National Movement unconstitutional if it secures a constitutional majority in the upcoming parliamentary elections.

The parliamentary elections, set for October 26, will determine the composition of Georgia's legislature. Leaders of the ruling Georgian Dream party claim they hold a strong position, with a rating of around 60%. They also predict that many opposition parties will fail to surpass the 5% threshold required to enter parliament. In response, some smaller opposition parties have announced plans to merge with larger groups like Lelo, For Georgia, and Novaya in an effort to gain parliamentary seats. To achieve a constitutional majority, a party needs to secure at least 113 out of 150 seats in parliament.
