German Chancellor vows tougher deportation measures After Solingen attack

27 August 2024 14:27

German Chancellor Olaf Scholz has vowed to enhance efforts to deport illegal migrants following a recent terrorist attack in Solingen.

In a speech delivered in the city, Scholz emphasized the need for stringent measures to prevent such incidents from recurring in Germany, Caliber.Az reports.

"We must do everything to ensure that such events, if possible, do not happen in our country again," Scholz declared.

He underscored that authorities will take all necessary actions to address the issue, focusing on improving the deportation process for individuals residing in Germany illegally.

In addition to tightening deportation policies, Scholz announced plans to strengthen regulations surrounding the possession of weapons, particularly knives. These measures are aimed at increasing public safety and preventing potential threats.

The Solingen attack, which prompted these new policies, has heightened concerns over security and immigration control in Germany.

The political ramifications of the tragedy started reverberating across Germany as soon as officials confirmed the suspect in Friday’s deadly stabbings was a Syrian refugee.

The alleged attacker - named as 26-year-old Issa Al H. - is suspected of links to the terror organisation Islamic State.

An already heated debate about migration has become even more ferocious.

A day after the attacks, conservative opposition leader Friedrich Merz demanded an end to taking in refugees from Syria and Afghanistan and called for controls on all of Germany’s borders.

Alice Weidel, leader of the far right Alternative for Germany (AfD), has gone a step further and wants a complete stop to all migration.
