Train crew escapes after wildfire engulfs locomotive in Canada VIDEO
A train crew escaped safely after a wildfire surrounded their locomotive near Armstrong in Canada's Northern Ontario, where widespread forest fires continue to disrupt transport and force evacuations.
Videos shared on social media showed flames on both sides of the railway tracks as thick smoke engulfed the locomotive. Footage filmed from inside the cab captured the crew watching the fire close in, with one member heard saying, "This could potentially overtake us," Free Press Journal reports.
According to reports, the incident occurred after the crew detached from the locomotive to rescue a foreman. During the operation, poor visibility caused by dense smoke reportedly led the detached unit to collide with its own train, igniting additional fires. The crew then abandoned the locomotive and escaped on foot. No injuries were reported.
Authorities said railway operations in the area were disrupted as emergency crews continued battling 128 active wildfires across northwestern Ontario, where several communities remain under evacuation orders.
