Israeli parliament dissolves, triggering October general election

17 July 2026 09:18

Israel's parliament has voted to dissolve itself, paving the way for a general election on October 27 and bringing the current Knesset's term to an early end.

The overnight vote, held between Thursday and Friday (July 16-17), formally triggered the electoral process. The current government will remain in office in a caretaker capacity until a new administration is formed, with its powers generally limited to routine government business, Caliber.Az reports per Israeli media.

In its final sitting before dissolution, lawmakers approved a number of bills covering security, judicial and social issues.

Among the measures passed was a temporary law extending compulsory military service from 30 months to 32 months. According to the bill's explanatory notes, the extension is intended to help the Israel Defense Forces meet operational requirements and address ongoing security needs.

The Knesset also approved the Basic Law on Torah Study, legislation ending the arrest of draft evaders, a law permitting gender-segregated academic programmes for advanced degrees, changes to communications regulation, and a bill separating the role of the Attorney General.

With parliament now dissolved, political parties are expected to begin finalising candidate lists, negotiating alliances and launching election campaigns ahead of the vote for the 120-seat Knesset on October 27.
