German President Steinmeier eyes December 27 for Bundestag dissolution verdict
German President Frank-Walter Steinmeier is set to make a decision on the dissolution of the Bundestag (Germany’s federal parliament) on December 27, said a spokeswoman for the German President’s Office, Cerstin Gammelin, on X.
“I intend to make a decision on the dissolution of the Bundestag in accordance with Article 68 of the Basic Law on December 27, 2024,” Gammelin quoted Steinmeier as saying, Caliber.

“In recent days, I have held talks with the heads of factions and groups in the Bundestag to ensure that there is no longer any prospect of forming a stable parliamentary majority for the German government,” the President remarked.
German Chancellor Olaf Scholz lost a vote of confidence in parliament on December 16, triggering early elections scheduled for February 23. Scholz, who had anticipated the defeat, saw it as an opportunity to rejuvenate his party’s political prospects following the collapse of his three-party coalition in November.
Since then, Scholz has led a minority government, relying on opposition support to pass legislation. The vote saw 207 MPs backing Scholz, while 394 voted against him, and 116 abstained.
The decision to call early elections comes ahead of the original September 2025 date, as Germany faces economic challenges and global crises. Scholz’s Social Democratic Party (SDP) is trailing in opinion polls, while the opposition Christian Democratic Union (CDU) under Friedrich Merz is poised for a potential return to power.
