Germany rules out recognition of Palestinian statehood

26 August 2025 12:52

German Chancellor Friedrich Merz has confirmed that Germany does not intend to recognise the statehood of Palestine, despite pressure from some international partners.

Speaking at a joint press conference with Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney, Merz stated that Germany would not join efforts to recognise Palestine, arguing that the conditions for such recognition had not been met yet, Caliber.Az reports via foreign media.

He emphasised that recent events had not altered Germany’s position and that the country would maintain this stance at the upcoming UN General Assembly session.

The international campaign for Palestinian recognition has gained momentum amid Israel’s nearly two-year-long military operation in the Gaza Strip, which has worsened the humanitarian situation in the region.

In recent weeks, the UK and France have indicated they may move forward with recognition: on July 29, British Prime Minister Keir Starmer’s office said London could recognise Palestine at the UN if Israel continued to obstruct humanitarian aid and military operations in Gaza, while on July 24, French President Emmanuel Macron announced that Paris would support recognition at the UN session.
