Germany to deploy Patriot systems near Ukrainian border
Germany will deploy Patriot air defence systems to the Polish city of Rzeszów, located near the Ukrainian border, later this month, German Defence Minister Boris Pistorius confirmed during his visit to Warsaw on January 13.
“We are well aware of Rzeszów's crucial role as a logistical hub for aid to Ukraine. I don’t have a detailed schedule for my meetings over the next two weeks, especially given the ongoing election campaign in Germany, but I will personally visit Rzeszów in January to ensure the Patriot defence systems are operational there this month,” Pistorius said, Caliber.Az reports citing foreign media.
Polish Defence Minister Władysław Kosiniak-Kamysz also acknowledged the significance of Rzeszów as a critical support point for Ukraine. “Jasionka [Rzeszów Airport] is a key port for supporting Ukraine, both in humanitarian and other aspects. Over 90 per cent of aid passes through Poland, which makes this allied support all the more essential,” Kosiniak-Kamysz stated.
The planned deployment of Patriot systems will complement the ongoing NATO presence in the region. In addition to Germany’s contribution, Norwegian military personnel have been stationed at Rzeszów Airport since December 2024. Norway has deployed troops, a NASAMS air defence system, and four F-35 fighter jets to Poland, further bolstering the air defence capabilities in the area.
Meanwhile, Ukraine has expressed its interest in localizing the production of Patriot air defence systems. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy revealed that Ukraine has repeatedly requested licenses from the United States to manufacture the systems domestically, reflecting its desire for greater self-reliance in air defense.
