Germany urges Iran, other countries to avert further escalation in Middle East

29 July 2024 17:22

The German government has urged all parties involved in the Middle East conflict, especially Iran, to take measures to prevent further escalation following a rocket attack in the Israeli-occupied Golan Heights that killed 12 children and teenagers last week.

The German government is "confident" that the attack, which targeted a football field in the Golan Heights, was carried out by Hezbollah, the Lebanon-based militant group supported by Iran, Caliber.Az reports citing the foreign media.

Recent actions by the Yemen-based Houthi militias, also supported by Iran, have further fueled instability in the region.

The recent rocket attack has heightened fears of a broader conflict, exacerbated by the ongoing tensions from Israel’s war in Gaza, which has been raging for over nine months.

German Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock has engaged with various officials, including her Lebanese counterpart, in an effort to de-escalate the situation and prevent further escalation.

German citizens in Lebanon, estimated to number around 1,300, are "urgently advised" to leave the country as soon as possible.

A rocket attack on a football ground in the Israeli-occupied Golan Heights killed 12 people including children on July 27, Israeli authorities said, blaming Hezbollah and vowing to inflict a heavy price on the Iran-backed Lebanese group.

Hezbollah denied any responsibility for the strike, the deadliest in Israel or Israeli-annexed territory since the start of the conflict in Gaza.

The attack sharply escalated tensions in the hostilities which have been fought in parallel to the Gaza war and has raised fears of a full-blown conflict between the heavily armed adversaries.
