Greece elects new president after fourth round of voting
The Greek Parliament has elected former Speaker of Parliament Konstantinos Tasoulas as president, a nomination put forward by Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis.
The results of the fourth round of voting, held in the country's main legislative body, confirm this outcome. The first three rounds of voting, held on January 25, January 31, and February 6, were unsuccessful, Caliber.Az reports per Russian media.
In the first and second rounds of voting for the president of Greece, a two-thirds majority was required (200 votes in the 300-seat parliament), while in the third round, a three-fifths majority was required (180 votes). In all three rounds, 160 lawmakers voted for Tasoulas. In the fourth round, the president is elected by a simple majority of 151 votes. The ruling New Democracy party, which nominated Tasoulas, holds 156 seats in the parliament.
