Gunfire shatters Czech town hall, leaving dead, injured
Two people have been killed and at least six others injured after a shooting at a municipal council building in the Czech town of Hřibská, police say.
The incident took place inside the town hall, where a gunman opened fire before being found dead at the scene, Caliber.Az reports via Czech media.
Authorities confirmed that one of the fatalities was the attacker, while the other was a civilian.
Among those injured are three police officers and three civilians. The town’s mayor, Jan Macháč, was also wounded, according to officials.
Czech Interior Minister Lubomír Metnar said the situation was “serious” but under control, adding that there was no further threat to the public. “The attacker is dead. Based on the information I have, there is no ongoing danger,” he said, announcing he would travel to the scene.
Police said three illegally owned firearms were found in the suspect’s possession. Investigators are currently ruling out a terrorist or extremist motive, suggesting the shooting was likely linked to the gunman’s personal problems.
Witnesses told local media that the attacker was a local resident and the son of a town hall employee, though these claims have not been officially confirmed.
Residents have been urged to avoid the area to allow emergency services to continue their work. Hřibská is a small town with a population of about 1,300 people.
