Large-scale cyberattack disrupts water systems across US states

02 August 2026 12:44

A large-scale cyberattack disrupted water supply systems in at least seven US states this week, forcing several utility companies to switch to manual operations, CBS News reports, citing sources.

The incident affected “at least seven states this week, including Minnesota and Michigan,” while state and federal authorities work to determine who is behind the attack.

Authorities are investigating whether Iranian hackers were involved in the incident. According to CBS News, the investigation is ongoing, and conclusions could change as new information emerges.

Officials are also examining the possibility that the attackers deliberately attempted to create the appearance of an Iranian connection in order to further escalate tensions between the United States and the Islamic Republic.

Despite the ongoing investigation, US President Donald Trump said he does not believe Iran is responsible for the incidents. In his view, responsibility could lie with authorities in Minnesota. Trump added that Tehran has more pressing issues than carrying out attacks on water supply systems.
