Spain's King Felipe VI voices concern over Ceuta migration crisis

02 August 2026 10:35

Spain's King Felipe VI has expressed his "concern and dissatisfaction" over the migration crisis in the autonomous city of Ceuta on the northern coast of Africa, which has become the destination of a massive influx of migrants.

The monarch stressed the importance of ensuring the security of Spain's autonomous cities and preventing similar situations from recurring, Caliber.Az reports per EFE.

He also underscored the need to take measures that would demonstrate to the residents of Ceuta and Melilla that they have the full support of the rest of Spain.

The comments come against the backdrop of around 50,000 migrants from Morocco crossing into the Spanish enclave of Ceuta in North Africa via land and sea routes.

The scale of the influx overwhelmed local authorities, prompting Spain to deploy its armed forces. The escalation has also sparked a diplomatic dispute between Madrid and Rome, with Italy reportedly considering suspending Spain's participation in the Schengen Area.
