Iran detains suspected sabotage cell linked to exiled opposition group

05 August 2025 14:02

Iranian authorities have arrested three individuals allegedly connected to a sabotage cell affiliated with the exiled opposition group, the People's Mujahedeen Organization of Iran (MEK), on charges of attempting to disrupt public order, stated.

The detainees were apprehended by the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) in Pakdasht county, located southeast of Tehran, Caliber.Az reports, citing foreign media.

Prosecutor Mohammad Hassanpour confirmed the arrests, stating, "Three members of MEK-linked sabotage cells who sought to disrupt public order and security were identified and arrested."

Hassanpour further accused the MEK of operating underground propaganda networks designed to recruit individuals and establish “sabotage cells” with the aim of destabilizing public order. “Security forces dismantled the cell and arrested all its members,” he added.

The suspects are currently undergoing "specialised interrogation," with investigations ongoing, according to Hassanpour.

This crackdown follows the recent execution of two alleged long-term MEK members who were convicted of manufacturing improvised mortars used to attack civilians, residences, and public institutions.

The MEK, founded in the 1960s as an opposition group against the Western-backed Shah, was outlawed after the 1979 Islamic Revolution due to its collaboration with Saddam Hussein’s forces during the Iran-Iraq war. Following the 2003 US-led invasion of Iraq, the group was disarmed but continues to campaign from abroad for regime change in Iran.

In recent weeks, Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei has accused the MEK of attempting to incite "unrest" with the objective of overthrowing the government, particularly in the aftermath of Israel's June 13 attack that precipitated a 12-day conflict with Iran.
