Late in the evening of October 2, Syrian state media reported that the Israel Defence Forces Air Force struck targets in the area of Dir al-Zour, in eastern Syria, near the border with Iraq.
A statement from the Syrian Ministry of Defence said, "On the evening of October 2, 2023, at around 23:50, the Israeli enemy launched an air aggression on a number of positions of our armed forces in the vicinity of the city of Dir al-Zour. As a result of the aggression, two military personnel were wounded and some material damage was caused."
The London-based monitoring group The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights (SOHR) reported that a large explosion was heard in the Qatibat al-Radar area atop Mount Harabish in Dir al-Zour, coinciding with the flight of unidentified military aircraft over the region.
The director of the monitoring group The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights (SOHR), Osama Suleiman, expressed confidence that Israel was indeed behind the overnight strikes on targets in the Al-Bukamal area in eastern Syria. In his opinion, the Israeli army command is counting on strikes on targets in Dir al-Zour province to prevent Iranian weapons from being transported through Syrian territory to Lebanon at an early stage.
According to Syrian sources, the Israeli aircraft involved in the operation received cover from the United States military and permission to fly through Jordanian airspace.
The Israeli authorities have not commented on this information.
