Landslide strands 75 people in Kyrgyzstan's Issyk-Kul region VIDEO
A landslide in eastern Kyrgyzstan has left around 75 people stranded after blocking a river and washing away a road in the Karakol Gorge of Issyk-Kul Region, the country's Ministry of Emergency Situations said.
The landslide, which occurred on July 14 in the Karakol Nature Park, descended from two sections of a mountainside, blocking the Karakol River, Caliber.Az reports, citing Kyrgyz media.
The obstruction forced the river to change course, eroding a local access road and cutting off the upper part of the gorge.
According to the ministry, about 40 tourists, 35 local residents and eight vehicles were stranded as a result.
Officials said a tourist camp located in the gorge provided overnight accommodation for those affected. No injuries have been reported.
Emergency responders, civil protection personnel and local authorities are at the scene, using heavy machinery to clear the debris and restore road access.
