Lithuanian leader offers heartfelt condolences to Azerbaijan in wake of plane crash
On December 30, Lithuanian President Gitanas Nausėda called Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev to express his condolences following the tragic Azerbaijan Airlines plane crash in Aktau, Kazakhstan.
President Nausėda expressed his heartfelt sympathy to the Azerbaijani leader and the people of Azerbaijan, mourning the loss of lives in the accident, Caliber.Az reports via local media.
He also wished a swift recovery to those injured and conveyed his solidarity with the Azerbaijani people during this difficult time.
In response, President Aliyev thanked President Nausėda for his thoughtful message and expressed appreciation for the support.
The leaders took the opportunity to discuss ways to further promote peace and stability in the South Caucasus region. They also noted that 2024 marks the 30th anniversary of diplomatic relations between Lithuania and Azerbaijan, highlighting the strong cooperation between the two nations, particularly in the fields of culture and humanitarian efforts.
To recap, the crash took place on December 25 when an Embraer 190 aircraft operated by Azerbaijan Airlines, en route from Baku to Grozny, tragically crashed near Aktau. The flight had 67 people aboard, including 37 Azerbaijanis, 16 Russians, 6 Kazakhs, and 3 Kyrgyz nationals. Sadly, 38 people lost their lives, while 29 survived.
