Marine Le Pen slams Trump–von der Leyen trade deal as “fiasco for Europe”
Marine Le Pen, leader of France’s National Rally parliamentary faction, has sharply criticised the new trade agreement between the United States and the European Union, calling it a political, economic, and moral “fiasco” for Europe.
In a statement posted on X (formerly Twitter), Le Pen denounced the deal negotiated between European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen and U.S. President Donald Trump. “The trade deal concluded by Ursula von der Leyen with Donald Trump is a political, economic, and moral fiasco,” Le Pen wrote. She argued that the agreement severely undermines EU sovereignty and further erodes it under the weight of what she described as “Brussels bureaucracy.”
The criticism follows a major announcement by President Trump on July 27, in which he revealed the key terms of the new U.S.–EU trade deal. According to Trump, the United States will impose a flat 15% tariff on all European imports, while the European Union has agreed to eliminate tariffs on American goods altogether. The Trump administration had previously threatened a 30% tariff on all EU exports to the U.S.
Trump hailed the agreement as the “biggest” trade deal ever reached with the European Union and a major success for American industry.
Le Pen’s National Rally currently holds the largest single-party bloc in France’s National Assembly, with 123 of the 577 seats, positioning her as a leading voice of opposition to Brussels’ current trade and foreign policy direction.
