US eases travel rules for Iran ahead of final World Cup group match

The United States has eased travel restrictions for Iran’s national football team ahead of its final World Cup group-stage match, allowing the squad to enter the country two days before the game against Egypt in Seattle on June 26.

“For the Iranian team’s third match in Seattle on June 26, the team has been permitted to come into the US two days before the match,” a Department of Homeland Security spokesperson told CNN.

“The Iran team will still be required to leave the day the match ends. The overall security measures and protocol are the same. We remain committed to providing the safest tournament possible for players, staff, and fans alike.”

Iran had previously been required to enter the United States just one day before its matches and leave shortly after, amid tensions between Washington and Tehran. The team was also forced to move its tournament base from Tucson, Arizona, to Tijuana, Mexico, while some members of its travelling delegation reportedly did not receive U.S. visas.

Despite the disruption, Iran has drawn its opening two Group G matches — 2-2 against New Zealand and 0-0 against Belgium — and is in position to qualify for the knockout stage. A win over Egypt would send Team Melli to the top of the group.
