Israeli authorities discover tunnel near Jerusalem checkpoint PHOTO
Israeli authorities said they have uncovered an underground tunnel near the Ez-Zayim checkpoint and arrested two suspects as part of an ongoing investigation into its construction and intended use.
According to a statement from the Israeli police, security forces were deployed to the area after receiving a report from the Civil Administration about the discovery of the tunnel. The site was examined by police units from the Judea and Samaria district and Border Police officers from the Jerusalem district, Caliber.Az reports.
Authorities said the tunnel was approximately 25 metres deep and extended from the Judea and Samaria area toward Israeli territory. Investigators also reported finding excavation tools, water bottles, gloves, face masks, and other equipment at the site.
Forensic teams collected evidence from the scene, including DNA samples, which police said helped identify two suspects: a resident of El-Azaria and a resident of East Jerusalem, both in their 30s.
The two men were arrested early on June 24 and taken in for questioning.
Police said the investigation is focused on determining when the tunnel was constructed and its intended purpose. Authorities are examining whether it may have been intended for security-related offences or the unauthorised movement of individuals across the area.
