Media: UK to ban Ukraine to strike deep into Russia

16 September 2024 14:36

The UK will not allow Ukrainian forces to use Storm Shadow missiles to strike Russian territory without coordination with the US.

London will not act unilaterally, as the effective deployment of Storm Shadow missiles relies on American guidance systems, Caliber.Az reports, citing foreign media.

There is no consensus within the Washington administration on this issue. However, the UK’s government believes that the US might still approve the use of Western long-range missiles against targets within Russia at the UN General Assembly later this month.

David Lammy, the UK Foreign Secretary, emphasised the need for a "shared strategy" among Western allies in support of Ukraine during an interview with Laura Kuenssberg on BBC1.

He highlighted the importance of coordinated efforts, stating, “As allies supporting Ukraine, it’s crucial that we have a unified strategy for future success. We’ve been engaging in discussions with the United States and other key partners, and we will be meeting with President Zelenskyy at the UN General Assembly in just under 12 days.”

Lammy stressed that “no single weapon can win a war,” but underscored the need for continued support to help Ukraine repel Russian forces in the Black Sea and address the significant aerial threats posed by Russia. He added that ongoing training for Ukrainian forces is essential to strengthen their position.

President Zelenskyy, in his recent statement, called for global assistance to defend against Russian military aircraft and the numerous guided aerial bombs causing daily casualties. He asserted that overcoming the fear of making decisive, necessary decisions is crucial to ending the war and protecting against terror. Zelenskyy reported that Russia launched approximately 30 missiles, over 800 guided bombs, and nearly 300 strike drones against Ukraine last week, stressing the urgent need for robust support from international partners to counter these threats and pressure Russia to end the conflict.
