Montenegro to summon national security council to tighten gun control measures amid tragic shooting
Montenegrin Prime Minister Milojko Spajić is set to convene an extraordinary session of the National Security Council on January 3 to discuss initiatives aimed at seizing illegal firearms from the population.
The government announcement was published via it's official website on January 2, Caliber.Az reports.
“In response to the tragic incident that occurred yesterday [January 1] in Cetinje, Prime Minister Milojko Spajić has scheduled an extraordinary session of the National Security Council for tomorrow, January 3. The agenda will include an initiative to conduct emergency actions in all Montenegrin cities to detect and seize illegal weapons, as well as a public call for the recruitment of new police officers to strengthen the capacity of security institutions,” the statement read.
The session will also address the necessity of adopting a new firearms law, which would introduce stricter controls and licensing requirements for firearm possession and use.
As Caliber.Az recalls, a dispute at a local bar escalated into violence when an armed assailant, Aco Martinović, 45, opened fire on the evening of January 1. In the course of the shooting 12 people were killed, including two children with several others having been injured.
