Snow falls in Morocco for the first time in 50 years
Morocco has witnessed an unprecedented weather event as snow blanketed several regions of the country for the first time in 50 years.
The rare snowfall has been reported by the Maghreb Arabe Press TV channel, drawing attention to the unusual conditions in a traditionally desert landscape.
According to the National Meteorological Center of Morocco, the extreme weather is attributed to a significant influx of cold air from Northern Europe. This phenomenon has caused heavy snowfall in various provinces in the south and southeast, including Azilal, Beni Mellal, Ifrane, Midelt, Taroudant, Tinghir, Ouarzazate, and Al-Haouz. In some areas, snow accumulation reached up to 35-40 centimetres.
Temperatures in mountainous regions plummeted to as low as -5°C, further intensifying the cold front. The snowy conditions have surprised both locals and tourists, prompting many Moroccans to head to the Oukaimeden ski resort, located just an hour’s drive from Marrakech. Visitors have flocked to the resort for skiing, snowboarding, and sledding, taking full advantage of the unexpected winter wonderland.
