Moldova increases electricity tariffs amid gas supply cut from Russia

02 January 2025 18:14

Moldova has initiated a significant hike in electricity tariffs following the cessation of Russian gas supplies, which began on January 1. The move is a response to the growing energy crisis in the country, as authorities brace for potential electricity shortages in early 2025.

According to reports from the National Energy Regulation Agency, Premier Energy, which provides electricity to approximately 70% of Moldovan consumers, has filed for a tariff increase from 2.34 to 5.13 lei ($0.27) per kilowatt-hour (kWh). Similarly, Furnizarea Energiei Electrice Nord, which serves northern Moldova, has requested an increase from 2.84 lei to 4.53 lei ($0.24) per kWh, Caliber.Az reports via Russian media.

This decision comes amidst a broader energy crisis, following Moldova's switch to electricity imports from Romania after Russian gas supplies were halted. Additionally, Ukrainian company Energoatom, responsible for the operation of nuclear power plants in Ukraine, is set to supply electricity to Moldova during the nighttime hours.

Moldova has been under a state of emergency in its energy sector since December 16, 2024, due to concerns about the looming energy shortages, which could be exacerbated by the interruption of Russian gas transit through Ukraine. The government has taken these measures in an effort to stabilize the country’s energy grid and mitigate the risk of blackouts.

In a related development, the break in Russian gas supply has also led to a heating crisis in the breakaway region of Transnistria, which has been left without heat due to the ongoing disruption.
