Morocco tests Israeli EXTRA missile, hits target at 150 km
Morocco’s Ministry of Defence has conducted a successful test of the EXTRA guided missile, produced by Israeli defence firm Elbit Systems.
The launch took place in eastern Morocco from a PULS multi-purpose launcher, striking a target at a distance of 150 kilometres.
According to Israel Defence, the trial is part of a broader modernisation program aimed at boosting the Moroccan armed forces’ precision strike capabilities. Rabat described the test as a “strategic upgrade” to its military and a move to enhance regional security.
The EXTRA missile features a 306 mm caliber, carries a warhead weighing approximately 120 kilograms, and has a maximum range of 150 kilometres. The PULS launcher is also compatible with PREDATOR HAWK missiles, which can reach up to 300 kilometres, giving the Moroccan military greater operational flexibility and expanding the scope of its missions.
Morocco’s procurement deal with Elbit Systems is valued at around $150 million. In the North African context, Morocco faces competition from neighbouring Algeria, whose forces operate Russian-made Iskander-E tactical missile systems.
Experts note that Israeli technology provides Rabat with superior range and accuracy, potentially altering the regional balance of power.
