Over 100 Ukrainian residents seek refuge in Azerbaijan

19 April 2022 15:03

Since the beginning of the war in Ukraine, 114 citizens of the country applied to the State Migration Service of Azerbaijan for obtaining a refugee status.

Together with their family members, the number of applicants totaled 129 people, the State Migration Service told Turan.Az.

“All applicants are registered in the State Migration Service at their location in Azerbaijan. The needs of these people have been identified and met, the necessary assistance has been provided, or they have been sent to the appropriate organizations,” the state service reported.

According to the Service, Azerbaijani legislation allows those who apply for refugee status to receive permission to temporarily reside, work, receive medical assistance in Azerbaijan, and get other services.

Earlier, the State Migration Service reported that, as of April 7, 6,163 citizens of Ukraine arrived in Azerbaijan, who fled the country because of the war. The Public Council under the State Migration Service of Azerbaijan has reportedly created a program to provide psychological assistance to Ukrainian citizens. The program has been operating since March 3 and available for the application of Azerbaijanis who left Ukraine due to the war, as well as other refugees from this region.

Nearly 5 million people have reportedly fled Ukraine to various countries of the world since the start of the Russian invasion on February 24, 2022.
