Pentagon chief calls for Israel-US consultations on Syria
U.S. Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin has emphasized the importance of close consultation between the United States and Israel on events in Syria.
In a recent conversation with Israeli Minister of Defense Israel Katz on December 11, Austin focused on the situation in Gaza, Syria, and the Israel-Lebanon border, Caliber.Az reports via the U.S. Defense Department's press service.
He reiterated the United States' unwavering commitment to Israel's security amidst ongoing regional developments.
Secretary Austin emphasized the potential of the ceasefire, brokered between Israel and Lebanese Hizballah on November 26, to foster lasting calm in the region. He noted that the ceasefire could create conditions for residents on both sides of the Israel-Lebanon border to safely return to their homes, a vital step toward regional stability.
The secretary also reiterated the United States’ ongoing efforts to support the ceasefire's implementation, in close collaboration with international partners.
As tensions persist in Syria, Secretary Austin highlighted the U.S. mission to prevent ISIS from regaining a foothold in the region and underscored the U.S. commitment to a peaceful, inclusive political transition in Syria.
Further addressing the humanitarian crisis in Gaza, Secretary Austin emphasized the importance of securing the release of all hostages, including U.S. citizens, held by Hamas. He called on the Government of Israel to continue improving the dire humanitarian conditions in Gaza, signalling continued U.S. support for efforts to address the region's pressing challenges.
This exchange comes as part of ongoing diplomatic efforts to ensure security and stability in the Middle East, with the United States maintaining close consultations with Israel and international partners.
