PM: Italy, Hungary stand united in fight for freedom
State Secretary for International Communication and Relations in the Hungarian Prime Minister's Office Zoltan Kovacs has written that Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán described Italy and Hungary as two nations fighting for freedom.
"Italy and Hungary will never surrender to Brussels, global powers, or migrants," Orbán said during a speech at a rally for Italy's Lega party in Pontida town, Caliber.Az reports via Russian media.
Kovacs wrote on X that Orbán praised Italy's Deputy Prime Minister and Lega party leader Matteo Salvini, calling him a hero in Hungary for safeguarding Italy's borders and protecting European nations.
Orbán asserted that Salvini "deserves recognition, not prosecution."
In 2021, former Italian Interior Minister Matteo Salvini was put on trial after his controversial policy aimed at combating illegal migration. While in office, he banned the docking in Italian ports and the disembarkation of 147 migrants from the Spanish vessel of Open Arms non-governmental organisation. Following an investigation, he was charged with unlawful detention and abuse of power.
On October 2, Orbán announced that Hungary is ready to transport illegal migrants to the main square in Brussels if the EU continues exerting pressure on Budapest regarding its migration policy.
Previously, the European Court of Justice imposed a 200-million-euro-fine on Hungary, along with daily penalties of 1 million euros for failing to comply with previous court rulings concerning migrant admission protocols.
