South Carolina sends 200 National Guard troops to Washington to back Trump’s security mission
South Carolina Governor Henry McMaster announced the deployment of 200 U.S. National Guard troops to Washington, D.C., to support federal law enforcement efforts.
“I’ve authorized the deployment of 200 S.C. National Guardsmen to support President Trump in his mission to restore law and order to our nation’s capital. The federal government will pay for this deployment under Title 32,” McMaster said on X, Caliber.Az reports.
“Our National Guard will work to assist President Trump’s mission, and should a hurricane or natural disaster threaten our state, they can and will be immediately recalled home to respond,” the governor noted.
Earlier, governors of other states took similar measures: Patrick Morrisey of West Virginia sent 300 to 400 troops, and Mike DeWine of Ohio sent 150 National Guard soldiers.
The mobilisation of forces comes amid statements by President Trump about the high level of crime in Washington. At his direction, the capital police were transferred to the control of the federal government, which caused protests among local residents.
