Police raid German jail over suspected inmate uprising plan

Police carried out a large-scale operation at Siegburg Prison in Germany's North Rhine-Westphalia state after receiving information about an alleged plan by inmates to stage a violent uprising, the state's Justice Ministry said.

The operation was launched on the evening of July 21 after a prisoner reported the suspected plot. Around 100 officers took part in the search of the prison, Caliber.Az reports per German media.

Authorities said the situation was under control and the operation ended at around 10 p.m. local time. No injuries were reported.

Officials are assessing whether any prohibited items were found during the searches. The investigation is continuing.

North Rhine-Westphalia Justice Minister Benjamin Limbach said any threat of armed violence in the state's prisons was "an absolute red line".

"If the suspicion is confirmed, those responsible will face the full force of the law," Limbach said.
