UK Deputy Prime Minister David Lammy announces his resignation

David Lammy has announced that he is stepping down from the UK government after serving as deputy prime minister since September 2025.

Sharing a post on X, he said holding a position in the UK government was the greatest privilege in his life, Caliber.Az reports.

“It has been the greatest privilege of my life, coming from humble beginnings in Tottenham, to serve in government as Keir Starmer’s Foreign Secretary, Justice Secretary and Britain’s first Black Deputy Prime Minister. I am immensely proud of what we achieved, in Opposition and in Government," he noted.

Reflecting on his departure, Lammy said he would have been "proud to continue serving in Cabinet" but acknowledged the incoming prime minister's right to appoint a new team.

Lammy wished Andy Burnham and the new Cabinet “every success.”

He added that he would remain the Member of Parliament for Tottenham and continue supporting the Labour government from the backbenches.

"I will continue to serve the great people of Tottenham, support this Labour government from the backbenches and do everything I can to help defeat Reform again at the next general election."
