Ukraine detects two fast-spreading COVID subvariants, Nimbus and Stratus
Ukraine has confirmed the presence of two new dominant coronavirus subvariants, “Nimbus” and “Stratus,” which spread more rapidly than previous strains and pose a heightened risk for people with weakened immune systems.
The Ministry of Health reported to Ukrainian media that Ukraine has recorded 38 cases of the Stratus subvariant and one case of Nimbus.
According to the World Health Organisation, while these subvariants are not inherently more dangerous than earlier strains, they can lead to severe illness among immunocompromised individuals.
Nimbus, first detected globally in early 2025, typically causes a sore throat, while Stratus, identified in January 2025, is characterised by a hoarse voice. Other symptoms mirror those of existing COVID-19 variants.
The Ministry of Health emphasised that vaccination, particularly with Omicron-specific vaccines, continues to reduce the risk of complications.
Revaccination is recommended every six to twelve months for high-risk groups, including healthcare workers, military personnel, the elderly, and those with weakened immune systems or chronic illnesses.
Pregnant women and children with high vulnerability to severe illness are also advised to stay up to date with booster shots.
Authorities also warned that outbreaks from these new subvariants could occur outside the usual winter season, including during holidays, highlighting the continued need for vigilance and preventive measures.
