NYT: Trump invites European leaders to White House talks with Zelenskyy

US President Donald Trump has invited European leaders to join his meeting with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy at the White House on August 18 to discuss a proposed plan for resolving the conflict in Ukraine, The New York Times reported, citing two senior European officials.

According to the newspaper, the invitation came after Trump briefed European leaders on August 15 about the outcome of his talks with Russian President Vladimir Putin.

During those discussions, Trump reportedly expressed support for a settlement plan that would involve territorial concessions by Ukraine.

This invitation came after Trump debriefed European leaders and Zelenskyy on August 16 about his talks with Putin, which failed to produce a breakthrough. The meeting aims to advance a trilateral framework involving the U.S., Ukraine, and Russia, with European support. Zelenskyy confirmed a “long and substantive” call with Trump and expressed support for a trilateral summit, emphasising that key issues must be addressed at the leadership level.

European leaders reiterated the need for “ironclad security guarantees” for Ukraine and no Russian veto over Ukraine’s EU or NATO aspirations.
