Polish Cabinet head accuses intelligence services of targeting presidential candidate
Marcin Mastalerek, the Head of the Cabinet of the Polish president, has accused the Polish intelligence services and the entire state administration of conducting a targeted campaign against Karol Nawrocki, the presidential candidate from the opposition party Law and Justice (PiS).
In an interview, Mastalerek stated, "The entire state administration, all the services, are hunting down Karol Nawrocki. This is an unfair campaign, and he is opposing the entire state administration", Caliber.Az reports per foreign media.
Mastalerek further claimed that the campaign against Nawrocki is part of a broader strategy by Prime Minister Donald Tusk aimed at destroying and annihilating PiS, the party supporting Nawrocki’s candidacy.
Nawrocki, the director of the Institute of National Remembrance, officially announced his candidacy for president on November 24. He has received support from the PiS, the former ruling party in Poland.
Recent polling data shows Nawrocki in second place in the presidential race, behind Warsaw Mayor Rafał Trzaskowski, who is nominated by the ruling party, the Civic Coalition, which is led by Prime Minister Donald Tusk.
Poland’s presidential election is scheduled for May 18. Should no winner emerge from the first round, a second round of voting will take place on June 1.
