Politico: EU leaders plan trip following Jan. 20 inauguration to increase pressure on Trump
The foreign ministers of France, Germany, and Poland are planning a trip to Washington D.C. shortly after US President-elect Donald Trump's inauguration on January 20.
According to anonymous statements given by three diplomats to the US-German Politico magazine, the trip by the three EU nations, also referred to as the "Weimar triangle" aims to demonstrate European unity, with the ministers seeking to engage with the new US administration.
Although the visit is still being arranged, and no date has been finalized yet, the publication suggests that German Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock, French Foreign Minister Jean-Noël Barrot, and Polish Foreign Minister Radosław Sikorski may be joined by the European Union's top diplomat. Estonia's former Prime Minister Kaja Kallas has taken over as the High Representative of the Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy in December 2024, replacing Portugal's Josep Borrel.
As the magazine recalls, EU leaders have shown willingness to collaborate with the Trump administration but remain wary of potential policies such as trade tariffs or the threat to annex Greenland, an autonomous territory of Denmark and NATO member.
