Politico: EU member states urge stronger measures on migrant expulsions
The European Commission (EC) should develop measures that would increase the efficiency of the mechanism for expelling migrants outside the EU.
Many EU member states support this idea, Caliber.Az reports, citing Politico.
“More can be done to improve the effectiveness of the expulsion [of migrants],” an EU diplomat said.
He emphasised that “many countries” in the EU believe it is necessary to “send a clear message” to the new EC “to really work on this”.
The interior ministers of the 27 EU member states will discuss further tightening of the community's migration policy during a closed-door meeting in Luxembourg, which will be chaired by Hungary on October 10.
In particular, the need to revise existing legislation in the field of combating illegal migration will be considered. The event comes ahead of next week's European Council meeting, where “leaders will develop a common approach to migration issues”.
EU leaders are pushing for quicker ways to deport people amid a broader push to crack down on immigration, according to a draft report obtained by POLITICO.
The leaders plan to press the bloc’s executive arm, the European Commission, to come up with new guidelines on deportations when they meet in Brussels on October 17, the draft report of their conclusions reads.
