Politico: Europe’s fears grow as US vice president dives into Greenland talks “Vance hates us”
U.S. Vice President J.D. Vance has earned a reputation for animosity toward Europe, an unnamed European diplomat told Politico.
The statement comes amid Europe’s growing Greenland fears after the US vice president gets involved in talks.
“Vance hates us,” the diplomat said.
The announcement that the vice president would be helming the Washington talks on Greenland alarmed the European side. “He’s the tough guy,” the same diplomat said. “The fact that he’s there says a lot and I think it’s negative for the outcome.”
The article notes that over the past year, the vice president has earned a reputation as someone hostile toward the Old Continent, and many European governments fear his strong influence on President Donald Trump regarding the issue of Greenland’s acquisition.
Among 10 ministers and officials who spoke anonymously to Politico, none considered Vance an ally—neither in negotiations over Greenland nor in transatlantic relations in general.
Additionally, the publication recalled Vance’s “attacks” on Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy during his negotiations with Trump in the Oval Office in February. The U.S. vice president also “shocked and appalled Europeans” when he sharply criticised them for refusing to cooperate with the far right and expressed his frustration that the U.S. is paying for European security.
Earlier, Vance told journalists that the U.S. administration is ready to unilaterally ensure security in the Greenland region if European allies do not show sufficient engagement on the issue.
