President Aliyev receives credentials of Somalia’s envoy as bilateral relations advance PHOTO / UPDATED

President of the Republic of Azerbaijan Ilham Aliyev received Abdinur Dahir Fidow, the newly appointed Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Federal Republic of Somalia to Azerbaijan, on April 14, in a meeting that underscored the continued strengthening of Azerbaijan–Somalia relations and the shared commitment to expanding political, economic, and multilateral cooperation between the two countries.

The ambassador presented his credentials to the head of state, after which President Ilham Aliyev held a meeting with him, Caliber.Az reports via citing the presidential website.

Expressing appreciation for the warm reception, Abdinur Dahir Fidow conveyed the greetings of Hassan Sheikh Mohamud to the Azerbaijani leader. President Ilham Aliyev thanked him for the message and asked that his own greetings be delivered in return.

Recalling the official visit of Somalia’s president to Azerbaijan last year, which marked a new stage in bilateral relations, the head of state noted that the visit resulted in productive discussions on strengthening cooperation, as well as the signing of several documents aimed at expanding ties.

President Ilham Aliyev praised the current level of political relations and stressed the importance of enhancing economic cooperation between the two countries. He also wished the ambassador success in his diplomatic mission.

Abdinur Dahir Fidow expressed his honour at being appointed ambassador to Azerbaijan and affirmed his commitment to further deepening bilateral relations.

During the meeting, both sides commended the effective cooperation in bilateral and multilateral formats, including within international organisations. They highlighted the significance of recent high-level engagements and the growing number of reciprocal visits.

The discussion also underscored the considerable potential for expanding collaboration in economic, trade, and other sectors.

It was noted that efforts are underway to implement the “ASAN Khidmet” model in Somalia, in accordance with the agreement reached during the Somali president’s visit to Azerbaijan.

The sides also discussed cooperation in science and education. They recalled that many Somali students studied in Azerbaijan during the Soviet era, and that this tradition continues today. In this context, it was emphasised that Somali students are currently pursuing education in Azerbaijan under the Heydar Aliyev Scholarship program.

The meeting concluded with an exchange of views on other issues of mutual interest.
