President Aliyev, First Lady share posts on Azerbaijan’s Constitution Day
President of the Republic of Azerbaijan Ilham Aliyev has shared a post on his official Instagram page marking 12 November – Constitution Day of Azerbaijan.
In a similar gesture, First Vice-President of the Republic of Azerbaijan Mehriban Aliyeva also shared a message on her social media pages to commemorate this significant national occasion.
November 12 marks the Constitution Day of the Republic of Azerbaijan, commemorating the adoption of the country’s first Constitution as an independent state in 1995. The Constitution, approved by nationwide referendum, serves as the foundation of Azerbaijan’s statehood, outlining citizens’ rights, the structure of government, and the rule of law.
Azerbaijan’s constitutional history dates back to the Soviet era, with earlier versions adopted in 1921, 1925, and 1978 under the Azerbaijan SSR. Following independence, a new Constitution was drafted under President Heydar Aliyev and has since been amended through nationwide referendums in 2002, 2009, and 2016.
The Constitutional Court, the country’s first judicial body for constitutional oversight, was established in 1998. Although Constitution Day is an official holiday, it remains a working day in Azerbaijan.
