President Aliyev receives "Gernika Award for Peace and Reconciliation”

26 April 2026 16:20

Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev has expressed gratitude after being awarded the “Gernika Award for Peace and Reconciliation,” citing efforts to advance peace and dialogue between Azerbaijan and Armenia.

"I express my profound gratitude to the Town Councils of Gernika-Lumo and Pforzheim, the Gernika Peace Museum, the Casa de Cultura and the Gernika Gogoratuz Peace Research Center for awarding me with the "Gernika Award for Peace and Reconciliation" in recognition of my efforts to achieve peace between Azerbaijan and Armenia and to encourage dialogue," Aliyev said in his address to the participants of the "Gernika Award for Peace and Reconciliation" ceremony, Caliber.Az reports via the state agency.

"It is a great privilege to receive this prominent award, which aims to perpetuate the historical memory of the Gernika tragedy and to honor individuals who contribute to peace and reconciliation processes. The presentation of this award on 26 April – Gernika Victims’ Remembrance Day – holds particular symbolism," Azerbaijani leader stated.

The “Gernika Award for Peace and Reconciliation” is a prestigious international honor established in memory of the tragedy of Gernika, Spain, in 1937, when German and Italian forces bombed the civilian population of the city during the Spanish Civil War.

The award is granted for outstanding achievements in the fields of peace, reconciliation, and human rights protection, as well as for efforts aimed at overcoming conflicts and promoting international dialogue.
