President Aliyev: True independence means pursuing independent policy

Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev has said independence is only meaningful when a country is capable of pursuing an independent policy, as he addressed residents of Boyuk Galaderesi village in the Shusha district during Independence Day events in the liberated territories.

Speaking during a meeting with returning residents in the village on May 28, President Aliyev emphasised Azerbaijan’s sovereignty, territorial integrity, and post-war restoration efforts, Caliber.Az reports via state media. 

“Independence is a great blessing, a great achievement. But true independence exists only when a country is able to pursue an independent policy. Look, Azerbaijan is one of those countries,” the president said.

The head of state stressed that Azerbaijan acts independently and in accordance with its national interests.

“Today, there are nearly 200 independent countries in the world, but it cannot be said that each of them is truly independent. We are an independent state in the true sense of the word, because we determine our own destiny, conduct our policy without external influence, and act in the interests of our people and state on the basis of protecting national interests,” he stated.

Aliyev also referred to Azerbaijan’s military victories in 2020 and 2023, describing them as a source of national pride.

“Both 2020 and 2023 represent our Glorious Victory, and we will forever take pride in this Victory. Today, every inch of Azerbaijan’s territory is under our control,” he said. “The sovereignty and territorial integrity of Azerbaijan have been fully restored. The peace achieved was on our terms.”

The president noted that celebrating Independence Day in the liberated territories has become a tradition since Azerbaijan’s victory.

“Since our glorious Victory, I have been celebrating this beautiful holiday, May 28 – Independence Day, in the liberated lands, and this has already become a tradition. I believe it is the most correct choice,” he said.

The president also spoke about ongoing reconstruction and resettlement efforts in liberated areas.

“Today we live comfortably, as a victorious people and a victorious state. This is a source of great pride,” Aliyev stated.

“Carrying out such restoration and construction work in a short period of time is also being done for the people. That is, for people to return quickly, live comfortably, and feel safe here; to build and create, raise children, care for the village elders, and enjoy life,” he added.
