President Ilham Aliyev attends opening of “AzerEnergy” OJSC’s “Jahangirbayli” Hydroelectric Power Plant PHOTO

29 September 2023 10:15

On September 28, President of the Republic of Azerbaijan Ilham Aliyev participated in a number of groundbreaking ceremonies in Jabrayil and Zangilan districts.

During the visit, he also attended the inauguration of the “Jahangirbayli” Hydroelectric Power Plant of the “Azerenergy” OJSC, Azertag reports.

President of “AzerEnergy” Open Joint-Stock Company Baba Rzayev informed the head of state about the works carried out in the plant.

In accordance with President Ilham Aliyev’s Order regarding the creation of new "green energy" potential in the territories liberated from occupation, "AzerEnergy" OJSC started the construction of a series of hydroelectric power stations (SES) in the fall of 2022 with a total capacity of 42 megawatts, each 10.5 megawatts, at four locations in the area, where Okhchuchay is passing through Zangilan district.

The works at "Sarigishlaq", "Shayifli" and "Zangilan" HPPs are close to completion, while the construction of "Jahangirbayli" HPP has been finished.

The engine room built for "Jahangirbayli" HPP, two 5.25 megawatts European-manufactured green certified French eco-turbines, generators, and remotely controlled digital equipment were installed. The station will generate more than 30 million kilowatt-hours of electricity per year.

The head of state launched the “Jahangirbayli” Hydroelectric Power Plant.

It should be noted that the State Agency for Environmental Expertise organised open public hearings in connection with the construction of the HPP on the Ohchuchay River with the participation of relevant government agencies, media and non-governmental organisations, and the project was highly evaluated.

Although the number of 370-megawatt HPPs built and planned for construction by AzerEnergy on full-flowing rivers in the territories liberated from occupation is three times less than the number of large HPPs with a capacity of 1,060 megawatts operating on shallow rivers elsewhere in the country, they will produce more energy. The point is that new stations built on full-flowing and fast mountain rivers, which are formed mainly in Azerbaijan, unlike the stations located elsewhere in the country, work productively even in the periods of low water. Thus, if in August-September the volume of production decreases to 25-30 per cent, in April-May, it exceeds 80 per cent, in all seasons of the year the stations work with a capacity of 40-42 per cent. Elsewhere, the figure is 10-12 per cent.

Thus, the Zangilan hydroelectric cascade, consisting of 4 brand new stations built in the territories liberated from occupation, will annually produce more than 130 million kilowatt hours of "green" energy. This, playing a huge role in the transition to alternative energy sources, is an important contribution to the fulfilment of President Ilham Aliyev's order to turn the region into a green energy zone. The HPP cascade project not only contributes to the energy and economic development of the region but is of great importance in terms of providing employment to the population.
