Russian Deputy FM eyes nuclear doctrine updates amid rising tensions

06 July 2024 16:39

Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Sergei Ryabkov suggested that Russia's nuclear doctrine could undergo "further specification over time" in response to increasing provocations from Moscow's adversaries.

Ryabkov emphasized the existence of a comprehensive military doctrine that includes detailed provisions on nuclear strategy, Caliber.Az reports citing Russian media.

He pointed to a specific document titled "Fundamentals of State Policy in the Field of Nuclear Deterrence," which provides substantive details and scenarios related to the nuclear component of Russia's military doctrine.

Ryabkov noted the potential necessity for conceptual adjustments and additional measures, echoing President Vladimir Putin's characterization of the doctrine as a dynamic and adaptive instrument.

"The President of the Russian Federation has described the doctrine as a 'living instrument,'" Ryabkov stated. "It is quite possible that, over time, we will specify the approaches our side can take in these extremely important and very responsible matters, particularly in situations where our adversaries escalate tensions."
