Scholz risks losing power if he calls early elections
Former MEP Hans-Olaf Henkel, in an interview with Express, warned that German Chancellor Olaf Scholz could jeopardize his hold on power if he opts for early elections amid the surging popularity of right-wing parties across Europe.
According to lenta.ru, Henkel suggested that Scholz would likely avoid following French President Emmanuel Macron's lead in calling for early parliamentary elections, fearing a significant setback for his Social Democratic Party amid current electoral trends.
Earlier POLITICO wrote that just two-and-a-half years into his tenure, Scholz’s fractious government has reached a breaking point. Beset by infighting and — in the view of most critics, simple incompetence — Scholz has presided over the most unpopular government in modern German history, with more than two-thirds of Germans expressing dissatisfaction with the coalition.
His personal approval rating has also set a negative record, with more than 70 per cent of Germans dissatisfied with the job he’s done.
