Taliban denies selling weapons left behind in Afghanistan after US withdrawal
The weapons left behind by the US after its withdrawal in August 2021 are stored in warehouses and are not sold to other parties.
According to Interfax, Zabihullah Mujahid, the chief spokesman for the Taliban made the statement on social media.
"The statement by some individuals in the US that the Islamic Emirate (this is how the representatives of the movement call their government - ed.) has sold to other sources the weapons and equipment left behind by US troops in Afghanistan is not true and we strongly reject it," Mujahid said.
He said all weapons, equipment, and vehicles are kept in the country's warehouses and reserves. "No one is allowed to smuggle or sell weapons over the internet," Mujahid said in a statement.
The US invaded Afghanistan in October 2001 under the pretext of fighting the al-Qaeda terrorist organisation, which was accused of carrying out terrorist attacks on US targets on September 11, 2001.
Twenty years later, in August 2021, the US and its allies hastily withdrew from Afghanistan, leaving all their weapons and ammunition to the Taliban who had taken over the country.
