Texas SpaceX base set to become city
Residents of the Texas site known as Starbase home to Elon Musk’s SpaceX launch facility have voted to officially turn the settlement into a city.
The area is located just outside of Brownsville, where the company's headquarters is situated, Caliber.Az reports via foreign media.
Only residents living within the proposed city’s boundaries, a group of fewer than 300 people, were eligible to cast their vote.
According to the Cameron County Elections Department, 218 people participated in the vote. An overwhelming 212 voters supported the proposal to merge SpaceX’s launch facility with the surrounding residential areas into an officially recognized city, while 6 voters opposed the measure.
Cameron County Elections Administrator Remy Garza stated that after the ballots were counted, the results would be presented to the county commissioners for final certification. Once confirmed, the new municipality will be formally registered.
"Starbase, Texas is now a real city!" billionaire Elon Musk posted on X. Musk first floated the idea of forming a city in the area in 2021.
